So, I’ve been thinking.
What it does mean when we say ‘the laws of nature/God/a higher being’ has a plan that’s set for you, where everything that is meant to happen in your life will happen?
What does it really mean?
Because a lot of us in the first world live simple, often meaningless lives of work, eat, sleep and repeat where not much exciting —or painful— happens.
But so many people suffer. Especially in third world countries. Especially in war-torn countries. Entire families get swept away in tsunamis, little kids become orphans before they gain a conscience and homes get bombed without a care by the heartless for what would become of those who lived within.
It’s hard to tell yourself that all of this is ‘meant to be’. The wars. The natural disasters. The killers. Rapists. Mass shooters. It’s hard to say that ‘God/the natural laws/a higher being’ has it all under control because it somehow takes the blame away from the people who are to blame.
And without sounding too grim, I’d like to take it back and notch and also apply it to cases which might be more applicable to you and I (hoping that the grim stuff isn’t too relatable to you), where the actions of others, such as our parents and close ones, can cause us so much pain, can bring boundless discomfort in our lives, can tear our world apart and have the power to sew it back together to such an extent that sometimes you really do feel powerless.
As though the string to your destiny is not in your hands but in the hands of someone who has no wish to steer it in the direction of love, happiness and light. As though you can spend your entire life hoping that those who have the power to change your life will change it for the good —but they keep letting you down. They keep letting you go. They keep doing things that tumbles all areas of your life around like damp clothes in a dryer with no end in sight.
No hope that your life will stop tumbling.
No reason to give you the happiness that you deserve.
In moments like this, saying ‘God/the natural laws/a higher have a plan for you in mind and everything happening will be in your favour’ feels so much easier than saying ‘Those who love you can hurt you in tremendous ways and not bat an eyelid. Not bat an eyelid.’
Sigh.
Is life ever really in our control?
