Helloo, lovebugsss! 🐞🌸
I’m back with a little travel update from a surprise birthday getaway to Lake Garda in April. Yes, I took my husband there as a birthday treat, and let me tell you—it was absolutely magical. If you're into gorgeous views, food that makes your taste buds sing, and a bit of peace and quiet (I mean, who doesn’t need that?), Lake Garda is the place to be.
Riva Del Garda: The Quiet Gem
We chose to stay in Riva Del Garda, and I honestly can’t recommend it enough. It’s everything I love about a peaceful vacation—charming, serene, and free from the hustle and bustle that can often come with the more tourist-heavy parts of Italy. Riva is tucked away in the northern part of Lake Garda, and while it’s not as famous as other towns around the lake, it’s a hidden gem that gives you the perfect balance of nature and culture.
We stayed at Du Lac Et Du Parc, and I have to say, it was absolute perfection. Nestled right by the lake with stunning views, a gorgeous park, and super comfortable rooms, it felt like we were living in a fairy-tale. Seriously, the location was ideal for everything we wanted to do—and the calm, peaceful atmosphere meant we could truly relax and unwind. If you're looking for a getaway that isn’t overly touristy but still offers all the beauty, Riva Del Garda is your place! (this isn’t an ad—nor is it gifted).
Car Rental: Freedom to Explore at Your Own Pace
When it comes to getting around Lake Garda, there’s one thing I highly recommend: rent a car. While public transport is an option, it’s definitely not the most efficient way to explore the lake. Ferries are nice but can be slow, and if you’re hopping from town to town, you’ll waste hours waiting. We decided to rent a car, and it was the best decision we made. My husband took on the driving, and I was perfectly content playing co-pilot and soaking in the views.
Having a car allowed us to set our own schedule, take impromptu detours, and enjoy spontaneous stops along the way. Plus, taxis can add up quickly, so driving was much more budget-friendly.
Day Trips: So Much to See, So Little Time
Lake Garda isn’t just a pretty place to look at—it’s a whole experience. From Riva Del Garda, we ventured out on a series of day trips, and each town we visited had its own unique charm. Let me break down a few of our favourites:
Limone sul Garda: This town is like something straight out of a postcard. With its lemon groves (the name “Limone” means lemon, after all) and colourful buildings, it feels like you’ve stepped into another world. The streets are narrow and winding, the views of the lake are breath-taking, and there are plenty of little cafés where you can sit back, relax, and enjoy a peaceful moment. It’s truly a photographer’s paradise!
Sirmione: This is where I got my fairy-tale vibes in full force. Sirmione is known for its stunning medieval castle, Scaligero Castle, which is surrounded by sparkling blue waters. It’s one of those places where you find yourself wandering along cobblestone streets, taking in the historical charm, and enjoying lakeside views. The Grotte di Catullo, the ancient Roman ruins at the tip of the peninsula, are another must-see. It’s an absolute dream for anyone who loves history and beauty combined. We even went on a sunset boat ride with a live musician on board, it was great!
Malcesine: Ah, Malcesine—where do I even begin? This little town, with its pastel-hued buildings and picturesque streets, was just as beautiful as the others. But the real treat here was taking the cable car up to Mount Baldo. The cable car ride itself is an experience, and once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of Lake Garda that will leave you speechless. We spent hours walking around, soaking in the fresh air, and taking in the stunning scenery. If you like hiking, there are tons of trails up there, but honestly, just being in that mountain air was enough to make me feel like I was on top of the world.
Venice: Of course, I had to take my husband to Venice. I’ve been before, but it was his first time, and it was a joy to experience it through his eyes. The gondola rides, the winding canals, and the iconic sights like St. Mark’s Square and the Rialto Bridge—Venice is just as beautiful as I remember, though I will say, it can get incredibly crowded, especially in tourist-heavy spots. But despite the crowds, Venice still manages to hold onto its charm, and my husband was absolutely smitten with the place.
The Weather: April Magic (with a Side of Wind)
We went in the last week of April, and while the weather was mostly sunny, I was surprised by how chilly it got, especially with the wind coming off the lake. The good news? It was perfect for layering. I wore dresses most days (because I’m that person), but I also had a jacket or coat to wear when it got windy. Trust me, that lake breeze will have you reaching for a jacket, even if the sun’s shining.
If you plan on doing a lot of walking—which you should, because it’s one of the best ways to see the area—comfortable shoes are essential. I’m talking trainers or flats, something that’ll take you through cobblestone streets without leaving your feet in agony.
Why Lake Garda? It’s Not Overhyped (Like Lake Como)
Let’s be real—everyone talks about Lake Como, but I feel like Lake Garda doesn’t get the credit it deserves. The beauty is just as stunning, but it’s not overrun with tourists. In late April, Lake Garda had a relaxed, calm atmosphere, unlike Lake Como, which can be packed with visitors.
If you're looking for somewhere to unwind without all the noise, Lake Garda is the perfect alternative. Plus, the lack of big crowds meant we got to enjoy everything at a much slower pace, and that’s exactly what we wanted.
Italy: You Have My Heart
I’ll say it again: Italy is my favourite country in Europe.
The landscapes, the food (hello, pasta and pizza!), the charm—it’s all so magical. Lake Garda, in particular, has a special place in my heart because it blends beautiful scenery with peaceful moments, allowing me to truly enjoy every second. I love discovering new towns, indulging in the local cuisine, and soaking up the romantic, laid-back vibes that Italy does so effortlessly. And let’s be honest, I’ll always find an excuse to go back.
